Pre-Purchase or Used Car Inspections

Consumers' Auto Detective will inspect a used car or truck to ensure the quality, safety, function and value before you buy a used vehicle.  Why should you have a used car inspected before you buy?

Where Has Your Car Been?

Cars that have been totaled can be rebuilt to look like they’ve never been hit. (ABCNEWS.com)

Good Morning America, ABC NEWS
Oct. 17, 2000 "Some experts believe that more than 1 million vehicles are totaled, rebuilt and sold as safe and damage-free each year."  Story no longer available online.

Channel 10 News, San Diego
Nov. 12, 2008 "Last year 2.5 million vehicles were totaled, over 1/2 (1.75 million) were rebuilt."  This story too says that many are sold as safe and damage-free.  See complete story here

Over eight years and the number of rebuilt vehicles being sold as safe and damage-free is growing.  In light of today's economy, fewer new cards sold and fewer reliable trade-ins, that number will only increase.

The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) advises: "Before you buy any vehicle, it is always wise to have an expert check it out. The engine isn't the only item to consider before purchasing a used car. The condition of the frame and body are just as important because proper frame and body repairs can often cost more than the vehicle is worth and improper repairs could be structurally unsafe. That's why it's important to find out if repairs were made and if they were made correctly."

Find out about potential problems before you buy

If you already own a vehicle that you think may have a collision history, it may not be too late.  If the vehicle was portrayed as something it is not, you may still have recourse.  See Post Purchase
